How
to catch those crazy gar !
Like I mention in the video
... gar are NO JOKE ! With two long rows of very sharp teeth, they can be
very menacing and do some serious damage ! So use caution and gloves when
dealing with these fish.
The best
way to find them is by sight, for they come up frequently to gasp for air.
Once you see them regularly in an area you can have pretty good confidence
of catching one. The best way to catch them is with a good sized dead minnow,
hooked into a one odd very sharp hook (similar to a dropshot hook). I use
a 18-24" 30 pound test leader, attached to a swivel and a slip bobber
rig. Depth should be @ 2-3'. Gar like to mouth and scale their meal before
they swallow it, so you must let them take the bait for at least 30-45 seconds.
After their first run they will usually stop to completely ingest the bait,
this is when you should set the hook. If you set the hook too early, your
chances of a hookup are very low if the bait is still in his bone like beak,
for it is very hard and difficult to get a hook in to. But when you do get
them hooked up ... they fight like a champ and are very fun to catch. It also
adds to the excitement trying to avoid all those sharp teeth ! :D
Please
... be careful and most importantly ... have fun !!!
